Undefeated Faith

Luke 22:31-32 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat.  But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail.  And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

Make Ready

Luke 1:17 “And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and Power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous -- to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

When guests come over to our house there is usually a bit of effort to make the house ready before they arrive.   Due to our busy schedules, sometimes our weekly chores get neglected, and if so, there is an all-out clean-up to make the house ready for guests!  Just like our homes, there are times that our hearts need to be prepared as well!

Hurts

Luke 6:28 “bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”
A couple of weeks ago I was moving quickly through my house and not really paying attention to where I was going. As I passed the end of my coffee table I miss judged the distance needed to clear the corner and caught the pinky toe of my right foot on the leg of the table. Ouch! If you have ever done this then you know this really hurts! What happened next was a yell, a cry, a message to the table about how it was at fault, and finally acceptance that I caused the pain.

Beating Fear

Luke 8:24-25 “The disciples went and woke him, saying, ‘Master, Master, we’re going to drown!’ He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. ‘Where is your faith?’ he asked his disciples.”
My wife hates horror films (To be honest I don’t like them either). However, every time a horror film trailer happens to come on Television she cannot turn away. She actually locks in and will repeatedly tell me how frightening and horrible the movie looks! “I would never watch that!” She often says after giving it 60 sec

Your Faith Can Grow

Luke 17:5  “The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our Faith!”

Most people thought the guy had it all. He was young, rich and influential. He was an alpha male. But inside, something was missing. He couldn’t name exactly what it was, but it had something to do with God.

So he tracked down the most spiritual person he could find, the rabbi named Jesus that everyone was talking about, and he got a private meeting. He asked, “Rabbi, I’m doing everything I know to do - What am I missing?”

Slow Down

Luke 2:15 “When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

Slowness is not usually rewarded in our culture today. No one says, “You know what is amazing about Mike: He moves so slow!” We don’t cheer the slowest runner in a race or reward the slowest worker on our team. However, if we want to make room for Jesus this Christmas season we need to learn to slow down.

Wait For It!

Acts 1:4 “On one occasion, while eating with them he gave them this command: ‘Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised.’”

A number of years ago I served as a Chaplin for a Division 1 football program. In many ways this was a perfect union of two of my greatest loves - God and Sports! One of my favorite memories of this ministry was standing in the locker room just before a game. I never missed this moment. The energy was palpable and the anticipation was high. The coach would call the team together to give them a talk that w

Defining Moments: The Moment of Truth

Luke 5:5 "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets."

I love watching the Winter Olympics! Every 4 years, it is interesting to watch competitions we don't see every day. Games like curling, ski jumping, and speed skating are exciting and novel because we are exposed to them only when the Olympics come around. Also, mixed into the novelty of the games is a keen sense of the moment. Many of these athletes have trained their entire lives for this one moment.
