Did Jesus Really Say That? Core Strength
Matthew 5:17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”
A few months ago, I discovered in a painful way that my core was not that strong. When, after a day of moving some boxes and materials as my local church, I couldn’t get off the couch because a disc in my spine herniated and pinched a nerve. Ouch! A surgery and months of PT later I now know the importance of core strength!
In Matthew chapter 5 Jesus starts teaching on the importance of our spiritual core. In this timeless message Jesus shares that following God is about internal transformation, not just surface behavior. Jesus sets a higher bar for what it means to obey God as he focuses on the heart. As an example, he tells us to not commit murder and to honor others inwardly. He also says, do not commit adultery and be pure inwardly. Jesus challenges us to our very core! His goal for our lives is inner change not just a change in behavior.
How about you? How strong is your spiritual core? It is disturbing right now to hear the hatred shared on radio and cable news. Is there any chance this has spilled over into your heart? Is there any hatred for others shared in your social media page? What about purity? Are you looking at anything online that you would be embarrassed to share with others?
Take a few moments to read and reflect on Jesus’ challenging teaching in Matthew 5:17-37. Allow God to challenge and strengthen your spiritual core today.
