Defining Moments: The Moment of Truth

Luke 5:5 "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets."

I love watching the Winter Olympics! Every 4 years, it is interesting to watch competitions we don't see every day. Games like curling, ski jumping, and speed skating are exciting and novel because we are exposed to them only when the Olympics come around. Also, mixed into the novelty of the games is a keen sense of the moment. Many of these athletes have trained their entire lives for this one moment.

Living with No Regrets

Joshua 24:15  “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

My wife Rachelle serves as a nursing home administrator.  Because of her role I often hear stories from the lives of those she serves.  This unique perspective has provided a pipeline of wisdom and experience into our family.  Everyday she hears the joys, regrets, and reflections of those who look back and remember.

When You Face a Trial

James 1:2-4 “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

What is your typical response to a trial? Do you become frustrated, angry, or sad? That would be natural. But James tells us that there is a better way! He says that we should consider joy when we face a difficult situation. At firs

Getting Unstuck When You Can't Decide!

“The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord.” Joshua 9:14

Have you ever felt stuck in a decision? At times, we can feel paralyzed by the choices we have to make everyday! What we wear, what we eat, career and family choices all take energy and have significant implications on our lives. This can lead us to ask: “How can I make better choices in my life?”

Entry Points

I met today with my “Timothy”, a 26 year old financial services professional. Our discussion revolved around how we got connected about 4 years ago. Our relationship has been an encouragement to both of us- mostly for me. We mused about the notion of how we can reach more men like him as part of the ministry of CBMC. Entry points. My Timothy was connected through a CBMC outreach event where the speaker talked about applying Biblical principles in his work.  My Timothy was intrigued. He wanted to know more and desired to spend more time with the men of CBMC. His next entry point was a week

Serving Other Kings

2 Chronicles 12:7-8: When the Lord saw that they humbled themselves, this word of the Lord came to Shemaiah: "Since they have humbled themselves, I will not destroy them but will soon give them deliverance. My wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem through Shishak.  They will, however, become subject to him, so that they may learn the difference between serving me and serving the kings of other lands."

Fresh Start

2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

Have you ever needed a fresh start? Maybe you were stuck in a rut at work and needed a change or were in a relationship that needed to end. There are times in life when we need a fresh start. As the calendar year flips to 2018 many of us will look to a fresh start as well. We will set goals for the coming year in hopes to change patterns we have today.

We Need More Light

John 1:1-5 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

99 and 1

Luke 15:4 “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.”
