Trade Worry for Peace

Matthew 6:19-24 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

I remember my first job.  I thought I was rich!  For 2 years I served as a graduate intern and finally my employer saw my value and offered me a full-time job with benefits.  I tried to hold back the enthusiasm when the offer of $26,000 was slid across the table.  That was more money than I had ever made!  Like many who have experienced such a windfall, I began to spend!  I bought a new car, diamond ring for my girlfriend, and signed a lease for a new apartment; I was set.  Then I received my first paycheck and was positive there was an error.  I went to our director of finance who explained to me the deductions that were drawn from my check, things like: insurance and taxes.  In one month, I went from living large to being worried about not having enough.

In Matthew 6, Jesus speaks about an issue that all of us wrestle with, the worry about having enough!  In this passage, Jesus reminds us that our positions will not last.  And when we put our faith in our possessions, it only leads to worry.  Jesus challenges us to live in a different way, to trust him and live for eternity.  When we do so, it will change the way we save, spend, and give the resources God has blessed us with.  It is also the way to experience God’s peace in this area of our lives.
