Humbling

Matthew 18:3 “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Pride makes us do silly things. I was consulting with a company a number of years ago when one employee discovered that another employee was making a little more than him. He requested that his salary be raised to one dollar higher than his co-worker. The marginal increase made virtually no impact on his standard of living so I asked him why he made this request. He said that it was a matter of pride. 

Pride is an issue when it comes to faith. We can’t be proud and enter the kingdom of God. We need to be humble enough to say, “Jesus, I need you!” Humble enough to ask for forgiveness. Humble enough to follow the direction of Jesus. Children don’t operate on pride. Adults do, though. We are the ones who say, “No one tells me what to do - not even God!” “I’m not going to look foolish, even for Jesus.” That’s why Jesus said, “Unless you change…you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

Are you struggling with pride today? It is a sneaky condition of the heart that often goes unnoticed. Here are some indicators that pride may have a hold on you.

How do you react when someone critiques your work? Do you ask your wife or husband how you can improve or do better? When was the last time you said, “I’m sorry. Will you forgive me?” When was the last time you asked God to forgive you?

Take few moments to examine the condition of your heart today. If pride has crept in, take a moment to humble yourself. If there is someone you need to ask forgiveness from, do it today.
