John 14:16  “And I will ask the Father and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever-the Spirit of Truth.”

Many of us struggle with understanding who the Holy Spirit is.  We may know that He is the third person of the Trinity but how often do we pray to the Holy Spirit?  That is ok, even the disciples didn’t understand the Holy Spirit when they learned about Him from Jesus!  God gave us the Holy Spirit to help us walk closely with Christ in all arenas of life.  Here are three ways the Holy Spirit helps us:

  1. The Holy Spirit Convicts:  There are times in life when we walk away from God’s best.  Often during these moments the Holy Spirit gently reminds us of God’s will.  Sometimes we even try to convince ourselves that what we want is right!  John 16:13 tells us that the Holy Spirit comes to guide us into all truth.”
  2. The Holy Spirit Guides:  Many times we think about God’s direction when we’re faced with a large decision.  Should I move or take a new job?  We seek God’s direction about ending a long-term relationship or making a large purchase.   Galatians 5:25 says: “that if we live by thy Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”  In other words let us constantly seek Him for guidance and direction.
  3. The Holy Spirit sets us Free:  The truth is we all sin.  We all disobey God and have to deal with the earthly consequences of our actions.  However, we don’t have to look over our shoulder waiting for God to drop the hammer.  Romans 8:1-2 tells us that Jesus did not come to condemn but to give us freedom.  The price is already paid.

How about you?  When was the last time you listened to the voice of the Holy Spirit in your life?  Has he convicted, guided, or reminded you that you are free lately?  Are you asking the Holy Spirit to help you make sense of the messages you are hearing today in the media, culture or work?  He will guide you to what is true!

Take a few moments to think about your life: your thoughts, your desires, your actions.  Ask the Lord to convict, guide, and give you freedom today.
