John 13:34  “A new command I give you:  Love one Another as I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

You may have noticed that an election is coming this fall!  The national conventions are a couple of weeks away and you can feel the tension rising.  We should remember that God wants to use all events to help grow us - even elections!  As we enter into this season here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. Seek the Kingdom first:  As followers of Jesus the Kingdom of God is to be our top priority.  Jesus’ disciples held diverse political opinions (Simon and Matthew) but they kept the Kingdom of God first!
  2. Show Love to those with different views:  One way to do this is to make a friend with someone who holds a different view than yourself.  Ask questions and learn.  And always honor the person and avoid personal attacks.
  3. Trust God more than a candidate or party:  We need to find the space where we participate in the election but trust God.  Our hope is not in Washington or who is elected.
  4. Examine all issues Biblically:  This is a great opportunity to review our values and examine where we stand on moral issues like sexuality, abortion, treatment of the poor, refugees and others.  Take the time to look at each of these issues and examine your heart, in light of scripture.  Share these values with your family.

Remember, elections are important and we should participate.  However, It is not the primary way God intended for us to change our world.  Change happens when we care enough to share the gift of Jesus one-on-one with those around us.  No elected leader will do this for us and we have this opportunity each and everyday.

God Bless,

Mike
